A Christmas Message from the Directors

It is that time of the year again, time to reflect on the past 12 months and look to the coming year ahead. 2005 has been yet another prosperous year for Strait Logics, we have again expanded our team showing year on year growth through continued hard work.

In addition to our existing services and continued R&D, new innovations that have successfully taken off for Strait Logics this year include the take up of Strait Online - our on-line communications solution and the launch of Strait & Direct - our personalised marketing picture font tool. We believe that the year ahead holds many challenges and opportunities for Strait Logics and its employees as we continue to grow in our existing markets and venture into new ones. We thank all our customers, employees and acquaintances for making 2005 a successful year and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Pricing in Proportion

An announced change to the Royal Mail’s pricing structure will affect the way companies design and send their postal communications in the future. This change is called Pricing in Proportion and takes into account both the size and weight of the postal communication.

How it works: The price of the postage will depend on the weight and SIZE of the ordinary mailing, these are classed as: letters up to half the size of A4 (A5), large letters up to A4 size and packets which includes anything else. The proposed changes are the result of the realisation that the bulk of the work for postal companies is in the handling of the items in terms of size and not necessarily just the weight - the basis on which items have previously been priced. It is recommended that to keep costs down and to be environmentally responsible, we fit everything into an A5 or smaller envelope. In the commercial world this is not always possible, especially when sending brochures or publications that simply cannot be folded into an A5 envelope. Thus if one is prepared to pay the penalty for sending larger communications they must be aware upfront of the extra costs. The changes, which are subject to regulations, are proposed to come into effect in April 2006.

So, be prudent and bear the size of your communications in mind right from the design stages as it could save you in the long run! Click here for more details.

Developer's Corner - The Dawn of a New Age by John McCartney

Strait Logics is undergoing a transition to the use of a new development technology. At present we use the C++ programming language to produce the PostScript that describes how a statement page should look. It is this PostScript that becomes an Adobe Acrobat document. But one day, this may not be the case...

For the genius' of Microsoft have decreed that C++ will have a successor, and that successor is C#. While C# is not set to completely supplant its predecessor, this new language combines the power and efficiency of C++ with the added functionality of the other languages in the Microsoft family.

It is C#’s flexibility and additional functionality that makes it a sensible choice for the development of both on-line and paper based solutions. What this means for our customers is a faster, more productive process to provide an even better service and solution to their document needs.
